Crete is more than an island of beautiful places. It is a land of stories that help us understand its unique character, pride, freedom, and deep connection to the landscape.
Some places are remembered for their beauty. Others leave a deeper impression.
These are the kinds of experiences I seek to create. My focus is not on visiting as many places as possible or following standard tourist routes. What matters to me is discovering Crete through the connections and stories that often remain hidden from the average visitor.
I approach the places I share with respect and appreciation. To me, they are part of the island’s living story — a story shaped by its landscape, history, and people. Some places are beautiful in their own right, but their deeper meaning often reveals itself only when we understand the influences that have shaped them.
Discovering Crete Through Its Stories
I work primarily with individuals and small groups. My goal is not to show as many places as possible in the shortest amount of time, but to create space for a deeper understanding of the island and the connections that often remain unseen.
Many places in Crete carry stories that help explain the island’s character, pride, freedom, and strong connection to the land. These connections give meaning to the places we visit and often transform an ordinary excursion into a personal experience.
Some journeys we take together. At other times, I recommend suitable places, routes, and local services based on each visitor’s interests and preferences.
My services are intended primarily for people who wish to discover Crete at their own pace and who are interested not only in the places themselves, but also in the stories, atmosphere, and context behind them.
How I Work
Every journey begins with a conversation about your interests, the type of experience you are looking for, and what you would truly like to take away from your time in Crete.
My primary focus is the western part of the island, especially the regions of Chania, which I know through everyday life and many years of experience in tourism.
Crete is a large and diverse island, and each region has its own character. Through my cooperation with the Kréta s námi project, local tourism professionals, and other trusted partners, I can also assist with planning excursions, activities, and experiences in other parts of the island.
In some cases, I may accompany you personally. In others, I will recommend trusted contacts, services, or solutions that best suit your needs.
Information Services
An important part of my work is providing information and guidance based on personal experience, local knowledge, and many years of involvement in tourism.
Preparing individual recommendations, planning excursions, and providing information services require both professional expertise and considerable time. When these services form part of a broader stay, retreat, or programme, they are usually included within the services provided.
Independent consultations and individual information services not connected to other services are available by prior arrangement and subject to a consultation fee.
I also share many tips, recommendations, and insights from everyday life in Crete through my Facebook page, Sofia Kamaniakis – Crete in My Heart.
Additional recommendations, inspiration, and mutual support can be found in the Facebook group Naše Kréta, which I co-manage together with the Kréta s námi project. The group brings together experiences from different parts of the island and provides an open space for questions, recommendations, and mutual support among people who share a connection with Crete.
Accommodation & Additional Services
I recommend accommodation only on a limited and personally verified basis. I share places that I know personally and can recommend with confidence.
I can also recommend a trusted airport-to-airport car rental service that has been used by my clients for many years.
My focus is not on the standard brokerage of tourism services. What matters more to me is a personal approach, local knowledge, and working with the individual needs of each person or group.
Through cooperation with the Kréta s námi project, local tourism professionals, and partner travel agencies, I can also assist with organising themed retreats, seminars, and tailor-made programs.
For group stays and seminars, I recommend planning well in advance to ensure suitable dates, venues, and services can be arranged according to the specific needs of the group.
My goal is to help you discover Crete in its authentic form — through its stories, connections, and character — in a way that is meaningful to you.
